Anecdote / Notes

  • After their marriage, Robert and his wife moved to High Ham, Somerset where they farmed. It would appear likely, based on Census records, that they raised their daughter Jane's eldest child, Emily Jane. She was living with them on the 1841 census named Emily Jane but with no surname or relationship given. Another of Jane's daughters also lived with them, Isabella. Isabella moved back with her parents, but Emily Jane is still with her grandmother on the 1851 census (as a "Visitor") but this time with the surname Groves.

Anecdote / Notes

  • The LDS website records for John and Rachel include basic details of six children (in essence, Name and year of Birth), but despite investigation on other sites it has been impossible to verify any of those details. As a minimum, one would have expected at least one child to show on at least one Census return, but none appear. They have therefore been excluded from my records.11

Child

Children with Samuel Phelps (born 1826, died 1 December 1898)

Family Notes

  • Although she was a widow at the time of 1911 UK Census, Selina completed details in respect of the number of children born in her marriage to Samuel - these were subsequently crossed out by the enumerator but are still visible on the schedule. That said, there must be a question mark over the accuracy of the details she recorded - she indicates four children born during the marriage to Samuel and three still alive, but in fact two (Henrietta and Ellen Virtue) had died by that date. Had she actually forgotten to include Henrietta (who may actually have been born just before their marriage) and instead included Edward (her illegitimate son born before her marriage to Samuel), or is there actually a fourth child?
