Anecdote / Notes

  • It has taken some years of searchng to find any information about Kate after she emigrated in 1909, and the marriage record (to James) was discovered more by chance than anything else!. However, even with an apparent change of christian name to Kathleen Mary (Kate is her recorded name on earlier Birth, Baptism and Census records), the inclusion of her mothers name on the marriage record transcript confirms that this is the correct Kate. Further, the Passenger List record for their journey in 1927 shows "Mrs Tapscott of Henley" as their last address in the UK. When she retruned to the UK is currently unknown.

Interestingly, there is a record of a Kathleen Mary Flavin marrying in NSW in 1930, but given that the Grant of Probate issued on James' death in 1948 specifically mentions his wife by name, it is believed that this is a different Kathleen Flavin (who, is also shown on a shipping record as having been born in England!).

To date (August 2021), it has not been possible to ascertain when Kate returned to the UK. Inclusion of her date of birth on the GRO death record, and her residence prior to her death (Tibbs House) on the Letters of Administration, once again confirm that, despite these records being recorded using Kathleen Mary as her christian name, they do relate to Kate.

Anecdote / Notes

  • The main details for Aquila have been taken from the report shown in the Sources listing, but other than Census records, where she is clearly named as Aquila Grace Lavis, I have so far been unable to find any records for Aquila's birth. However in late 2021 I foound handwritten records of the GRO records for their marriage. The records are of poor quality and, in one case, badly smudged, but I am reasonable confident they relate to Robert and Aquila.
