  • In June 1896 John Harris and his partner Fred Tapscott are mentioned in reports in the local paper referencing the 1896 Brickyard strike in Bridgwater. Frustrated with the strikers actions, they attempted to bypass the strikers by indicating tiles were being transported to the local hospital for works there, whereas in fact they were taking them to their site in Wembdon. The strikers eventually realised this and seized the carts. The tension in the area escalated and finally troops were called in to support the already expanded police presence.
    A few days later, and with no end to the violence, the Riot Act was read from the steps of the Town Hall and the town came under millitary rule.4
