Anecdote / Notes

  • After their marriage, Robert and his wife moved to High Ham, Somerset where they farmed. It would appear likely, based on Census records, that they raised their daughter Jane's eldest child, Emily Jane. She was living with them on the 1841 census named Emily Jane but with no surname or relationship given. Another of Jane's daughters also lived with them, Isabella. Isabella moved back with her parents, but Emily Jane is still with her grandmother on the 1851 census (as a "Visitor") but this time with the surname Groves.

  • Details for the children are taken from the LDS website, but given few of them are verifiable via alternative sites, their accuracy must be considered questionable for now.11

  • Henrietta Phelps (born between October 1852 and December 1852, died between April 1858 and June 1858)
  • Henry England Phelps+ (born between January 1854 and March 1854, died between October 1925 and December 1925)

  • Ellen Virtue Phelps (born between January 1863 and March 1863, died 13 June 1888)

Family Notes

  • Although she was a widow at the time of 1911 UK Census, Selina completed details in respect of the number of children born in her marriage to Samuel - these were subsequently crossed out by the enumerator but are still visible on the schedule. That said, there must be a question mark over the accuracy of the details she recorded - she indicates four children born during the marriage to Samuel and three still alive, but in fact two (Henrietta and Ellen Virtue) had died by that date. Had she actually forgotten to include Henrietta and instead included Edward (her illegitimate son born before her mattiage to Samuel)?
